Apollo 13 was the seventh manned mission in the Apollo space program. 3 days into a planned 6 day moon mission, an oxygen tank exploded, prompting Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks in the movie) to utter the famous words, “Houston, we have a problem” … Today marks the 48 th year after their safe, but harrowing return. Today, we honor these brave men.

In the movie, and in pop culture, ‘Houston, we have a problem’ is commonly recognized and repeated. But that’s not what he said. Lovell actually stated, ‘Houston, we HAVE HAD a problem. So what? We all have had problems but let me suggest that problems don’t have us unless we grant them permission to take ownership of our lives. Gene Kranz, mission flight director famously stated, ‘no American has ever died in space, it won’t happen now—FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION’. Do we fail in life? Absolutely, but it is an event, not a lifestyle choice. Today’s focus: let’s turn today’s failures in to stepping stones to tomorrow’s successes by drawing on our resources (men in this grp; DFQ) and faith to make better choices.
